Name of creator
Frederick Cluett Landen was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England in 1878. He first came to Winnipeg sometime between 1901 and 1903 to see what the City had to offer. While there, he took several photographs and added them to an album given to him by his older brother, Arthur, in the hopes that they would convince his fiancé, Mary Elizabeth, to move there, which they did in around 1904. Landen continued to add photographs to his album until 1906 and he and Mary Elizabeth lived in Winnipeg for the rest of their lives, starting a painting and decorating business and having two children. Mary Elizabeth passed away in 1939, followed by her husband in 1966.
Originally created by Arthur Landen in 1887 and added to until 1901. In 1903, Fred Landed took the album to Winnipeg, and added additional photographs until he went back to England in 1906. Fred Landen’s daughter inherited the album upon his death and subsequently donated it to the City of Winnipeg Archives in 2004 (Accession 2004/04).
Scope and content
Photograph album created by brothers Arthur and Fred Landen of Hull, England. Consists of circa 150 photographs of Arthur Landen’s time as Honourable Lieutenant and Quartermaster in the 1st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers while stationed in Spain, Gibraltar, Egypt, and elsewhere in Africa between 1887 and 1907, as well as circa 40 photographs of Fred Landen’s stay in Winnipeg between 1903 and 1906 and his home in Hull, England. Winnipeg photographs feature homes, commercial buildings, and modes of transporation. The pages are loose and many of the photographs are faded.
