Collection consists of fire insurance plans for the City of Winnipeg. Fire insurance plans are maps showing, by colours and symbols, detailed information about each building including structure size and shape, construction materials and detailing, number of floors and lot size. Additional information can include street widths, street numbers, property lines and such fire protection facilities as water pipes or mains, fire hydrants and fire alarm boxes. The plans show streets, churches, hotels, industrial, commercial and public buildings. The plans were originally contained in five bound atlases. These have been disassembled to facilitate access. Information is accessed through a map key.

Fire Insurance Plan of the City of Winnipeg, Charles E. Goad Co.

A set of fire insurance plans that were created and used by the Charles E. Goad Co. to assess risks. Each map shows outlines of buildings and other structures along city streets, using symbols and colours to highlight relevent details, such as building material and number of floors. The maps were updated between 1895 and 1905 to accomodate new and alterred structures. This was done by pasting new content over older. Each map has an associated sheet number that corresponds to a key on a larger map, which can be used to quickly identify maps of specific areas.
